If you end up getting orthodontics in Waterloo, you may need to abstain from eating certain foods that can damage your braces and therefore require additional dentistry.
But don’t panic … I won’t ask you to clear out your entire fridge and all your cupboards. Here’s a list of seven food items you should stay away from during your orthodontic treatment …
Crusty French breads
Bagels
Chips
Nuts
Popcorn
Pretzels
Candies (caramel, lollipops, gumballs, etc.)
My rule of thumb is if it’s crunchy, sticky, or chewy, stay away from it! Ice cubes also pose a risk.
Why can these food items be harmful to your braces? They can result in broken brackets or loose bands. I’ve seen it happen before.
… And if you have a habit of chewing on pens, pencils, or fingernails, you’ll need to do your best to stop.
You can eat fruits and veggies like … apples, carrots, celery, and corn, but they should be cut into small pieces first. Planning on eating meat? If it has a bone, make sure to cut off the meat.
